At the Shark Park Cafe, Portslade, Phoenix offers exciting all-day children’s acting classes at our Saturday school, which is open to all students aged 4 to 19. Separate to the weekend theatre school, Phoenix offers the opportunity to take part in professionally run full-scale musicals performed around Brighton and Hove, and open to any performers aged 5 – 99 years!
Our Chicks take a weekly journey through the magical world of performing and musical theatre. Each student is enabled to be a unique performer who is exploring their own personal journey. We work on improvisation skills, singing, movement and confidence building during our children’s acting classes in Brighton and Hove!
What will my child gain?
Our chicks leave us with improved confidence and self-esteem. We work on speech sounds, accents and pronunciation. We teach communication skills, how to make eye contact, working in a team, sharing, and listening to others.
Our chicks are invited to participate in all our extra curricular activities such as performing at festivals, Pride, residential home singing, and our large scale musicals.
Chicks are moved up to the main class on an individual basis, dependent on being ready for a longer and more disciplined session.
Every Saturday in term time we hold our three hour Musical Theatre classes. Phoenix offers a high level of teaching in all areas of performance and musical theatre; working on acting through song, storytelling, dance, and ensemble work within a performance. We also work on improvisation skills, stage fighting, group dance numbers, drama games, team building and harmony part singing. Our students work on numbers from a variety of musicals and build up a repertoire of musical theatre medleys.
What does a Phoenix
student gain?
Our students gain self-confidence, self-esteem and the ability to be bold. We encourage experimentation in the arts within a safe space.
Students work with their peers, who bring a wide range of different abilities and skills.
Our children’s acting classes in Brighton & Hove help young performers to mature and grow, and to gain essential life-skills through drama, musical theatre, dance and performance.
Some of our older students are invited in the afternoon to attend one to one and small group sessions in drama, singing, dance, LAMDA, audition technique, festival entry, plus extra show rehearsals. We also run this as a teen and pre-teen chill-out zone, to enable our students to socialise and work together on their performing projects.
What does an Elite
student gain?
Our Elite students stay for afternoon teaching by invitation only. They are usually invited from about the age of 10, depending on maturity and ability.
We work in a very small disciplined environment, to enable those students who wish to take performing further.
Many of our Elite students move on to Drama School or Performing Arts courses at 16 or 18 years old.
Our Elite students can also apply to become Creative Enablers, who work with the younger students during our morning classes. This is a position of great responsibility and only our very best students are employed.
